Something else I noticed is how this would typically only work on someone who is very responsive to suggestion, because I assume Derren had no time to prepare the student. By getting the master to choose the student for him he assumes that the master will choose someone who is a good student, a good learner, and therefore a good subject for this trick?

I think I figured …
I think I figured out how he did the air punch. What Derren did was he put pressure on the studen’ts stomach, and by asking the student, “can you feel this?” he associates his (Derren’s) movements with his stomach muscles. When Derren punches, movement is very obvious, and the student is focused on him, so his subconscious mind reacts in his muscles and causes him to contract almost involuntarily. When Derren does it from behind the student, he simply knows that the student will pick up on it.
